Follow the Education Money Down the Decades

I’ve just finished reading a Pulitzer Prize winning novel about an idealistic Nebraska farm boy who dreams of being part of some significant cause that will give meaning to his life.

Claude Wheeler thinks he may find a purpose for his life if his parents will let him go to the State University. Claude’s bewildered mother responds:

But how can there be any serious study where they give so much time to athletics and frivolity? They pay their football coach a larger salary than their President.

Although One of Ours, the Willa Cather novel in which these characters appear, was published in published in 1922, not a lot has changed.

In 2010 Nebraska paid its head football coach $2.1 million and its University Chancellor $278,378.
